A maximum of twelve musicians are invited to participate.
 

AT A PRACTICE MARATHON RETREAT, MUSICIANS ACQUIRE NEW SKILLS for managing music practice intelligently, efficiently and joyfully. In a distraction-free and beautiful natural environment "far from the madding crowd," each participant is offered a unique, twenty-first century methodology for improving instrumental skill, interpretative skill and performance consistency. There is a library of videos, audios and books on music practicing and performing as well as fitness equipment; gourmet food; and abundant space and time in which to process and absorb new awarenesses. The environment is non-competitive and stimulates collegial interaction. Originally the retreats were only for string players, but the program has expanded to include woodwinds, brass, piano and harp. Click here if you play one of these instruments.

Each participant receives three one-hour lessons each week from Burton Kaplan, String Faculty, Manhattan School of Music. If you are a woodwind or brass player, or a pianist or harpist, click here.

Daily workshop seminars feature unique ways to increase your technical and artistic command; topics are custom tailored to the needs of each individual.

Mock auditions and solo performances are arranged whenever you need an audience.

 

Six hours of practice six days a week is the goal of each marathoner. You will learn to manage your work to avoid injury.

Conversations with colleagues
will stimulate your imagination and provide invaluable feedback.

The Farm has an eclectic library of books and magazines on instrumental technique and the psychology of performance, as well as audio and video recordings of great performances in all formats.

 

Self observation while practicing and performing is available daily through audio and video recording.

Special Chamber Music Marathons
can be arranged for one or two groups at a time. These intensive sessions include unique exercises for improving skills of communication and negotiation during rehearsals and a method of interpreting a score. Only already-formed groups are eligible to apply.

THE PLACE

The 190 year-old main house sits "far from the madding crowd" on 80 breathtaking acres at the top of the mountain. The new wing, an addition of 9 soundproofed rooms, features a library/listening room, a concert space and a fitness room.

GOURMET MEALS are prepared communally except for four special dinners each week, created by an expert chef. There is an additional charge of $60 per person per week for her services. All menus are arranged in advance in accordance with your dietary preferences.

LOCATION AND TRAVEL

Magic Mountain Music Farm is in Morris, New York, a three and one-half hour drive by car from New York City. The nearest bus terminal is in Oneonta, New York and the closest airport is in Binghamton, New York. There is no charge if you are picked up in Oneonta. There is a $95 limo fee if you wish to be picked up at the airport. The next closest airport is Albany, New York. The limo fee from Albany airport to MMMF is $175. It is a two-hour ride.

Each summer session is 2 weeks (16 days). To calculate the total cost, add $80 for the application fee, and $60/week for the chef surcharge to the tuition room & board above. If cost is a problem, we are able to offer interest free extended payment plans of up to 10 months.
